Upgrade to Wii Motion Plus Controllers For Less

If you're like me, you bought your Wii a year or two ago.  Even then, if you planned on playing with somebody other than yourself, you had to shell out quite a bit of extra cash for additional controllers ( in my case 3 of em! ).  It didn't make me happy, but I saw it as a one time thing, not unlike buying the Wii itself.

Hack your Wii, even if you've updated to 4.3u

There's quite a few 'how to' articles floating around the net on how to 'hack' your Wii.  There's even a few youtube "how to" videos.  But where a number of them seem to fall short are on details.  Seems like you are inevitably presented a question in the process that the article doesn't mention.  Or the article says to do X after Y happens..... but you never see Y happen.

Let me give you a little background so that you can understand a bit of what I'm explaining how to do.  But before that, you must be forewarned...

Master Geek Xmas Lights

I once was that guy.... the one that would have put a 2000W Super Trouper spotlight on top of his house for Christmas.  The one that counted just how many lights he had on the house, because more is always better when it comes to Christmas lights.

Then we had kids ;)  You might think that this would have prompted me to put more lights up.  But with kids being such a time sink, the display only dwindled.  These days I put up enough lights to look decent, the kids like it and are old enough to help.  But it's nothing like the Griswald type display that I'd like to shoot for.

Why I don't throw things away...

What are you keeping that for?

When will you ever use that again?

Isn't that junk?

Why don't I throw things away?  Because you never know when you'll need that thing-a-ma-whatsit to fix something.  The defining difference between the average person and myself is, I tend to break quite a bit of stuff.  And so I generally find myself fixing more things than most people do.

DeWalt Brand Kitchen Hand Mixer?

So, my parents are visiting this past weekend, and I'm making the one tasty thing I'm capable of cooking... pancakes.  I get all the ingredients in a bowl, and pull out the mixer to whip it up.  Thing is, something came 'loose' in the mixer the last time or so that I used it.  And the beaters have been running wonky since then.  They're out of sync, bumping into each other, kinda pitches the wrong direction.  So I'm hoping it'll make it through at least one more batch of pancakes.

How do I like iOS4 on my iPhone 3g?

About as much as I like root canals.

Being a geek, I have this disease that drives me to upgrade/patch/ flash every gadget I have to the absolute bleeding edge latest version available.  This has led to much heartburn over the years.

So of course, when Apple rolled out iOS4 I had to bump my phone up to it the same day.... as you may have read here and there this was not the best plan of action.

Airplane - The Family Adventure

Ted Striker : Surely there must be something you can do.
Rumack : I'm doing everything I can... and stop calling me Shirley.

I'm always up for surprising, shocking, or just plain scaring the hell out of someone.  It just happened that I was presented with a perfect opportunity to surprise my kids.  And in a big way.

My wifes mother lives in Nashville and it had been quite some time since we'd been up there to visit.  Even then, the last time we visited we drove.  Believe it or not the stress of 14 or so hours in a van driving there doesn't even come close to the stress of trying to keep track of and move 5 people, 3 of whom were either very little or infants, along with all their 'stuff' (diaper bags, 10 tons of clothes, playthings, strollers, car seats...) through airport, security, getting on and off the plane, ......... it stresses me out just thinking about it.  I did it once with only two kids, and swore never again until they can carry their own crap!

Where do all the good socks go?

So, late Sunday night, the generally uneventful weekend made an early jump to Monday quality headaches.

A load of clothes in the washer comes to an early stop with the washer throwing some error code and allot of beeping.  This often happens when the load goes out of balance during the spin cycle.  So I opened it up, thew stuff around trying to redistribute it, and started it back up.  Only to have it occur again.

The third time it happened I realized something else was up.  It wasn't showing the "ub" error for unbalanced.  Instead it said "ld".... oh dear... the washing machine is on the fritz.

HALO.... the Atari 2600 version

Quick out of character post.... because awesomeness of this magnitude, must be spread.

Picked this up off of Engadget a bit ago...
they got it from Boing Boing a bit before that, and so goes the intraweb ;)

Ed Fries, a former Microsoft VP and currently runs Figure Prints (because playing Warcraft isn't geeky enough), has been spending spare time learning how to code games for the Atari 2600.

Why?!  Because it's frikin' cool!

Halt your Wii's Appetite for Batteries!

If you have a Wii + Kids, then you're burning through batteries at an alarming rate just as I was.  I knew I had to try something different, it was just getting out of hand.  Almost all of these batteries are from Wiimote usage just since the start of summer.  Like I said, out of hand!

Ohhhh! That's why we have ants!

So, I get an message from my wonderful wife today that the ants are invading the kitchen.  Now, this was just the latest in an all weekend tale of defending the homeland from an invasion of ants.  It seems the ants didn't enjoy the torrential rains we'd been experiencing, and decided they liked it better in our kitchen.  First streaming in from this window, then that one, then the sockets... on and on.  After having saturated every point of entry I could think of with poison, inside and out, I thought we might be safe.

Your hard drive will fail you one day... PREPARE!

I am here to tell you that you will lose your data.  Not that you might, or that if you're not careful something bad might happen.  It will happen.  Maybe not today, tomorrow, or next week.  But eventually, you will have a hard drive fail on you!

As dad, how do you prepare to handle the death of a pet?

Early last week our very loved, very old Bassett Hound, Simon, started acting a bit odd.  Now, the first thing a vet might ask is "any changes in his energy level?"  Well, he's a Bassett Hound.  He's spent around 20 of 24 hours each day sleeping, for the past 5 years.  Its just what they do.

Apple App Store - Bane or Boon

"in the end...Apple will sell more b/c it was the first, easiest to use, & has trendy looks."

That was one of the lines in a conversation over IM today @ work.  I warned the guys involved that I was going to steal their lines.  The whole exchange was something like this:

Geek #1:  in the end...Apple will sell more b/c it was the first, easiest to use, &; has trendy looks.
Geek #2:  tru dat
Geek #3:  and it has apps... /   lots of apps /  that don't suck
Geek #1:  yeah, I agree...the approval process does help.
Geek #3:  and I feel like I can go against the holy jobs at any time by jail breaking

Why "What Droid Does" isn't so important........

I sit here on the eve of what is almost assured to be the revelation of a new generation of iPhone, and release of the new 4.0 iPhone OS.  What better time to throw some fuel on the fire of the iPhone VS Droid debate ;)

To compare the two competing mobile OS's one might be compelled to draw up one of those nice comparison charts.  You know, with the pretty check boxes or numbers showing what each platform offers in price, stats, and features.  I particularly like the ones which are put together by the marketing group from one of the included devices.  Where they include options that not only are unique to their product, but really are only of any use to their product as well.  I might even be inclined to point out some marketing research showing which device is gaining more of, or holding onto market share.  I might chose to beat a dead horse and talk about how Apple has such a huge head start in user base and number of applications that nobody will ever be able to catch up.

The 'new' Facebook privacy settings...what's it mean this time?!

A year or so ago, the phenomenon of social networking that is Facebook finally made it's way to our door.  Being the geek of the house, it was up to me to determine just what it was all about and educate the people around me to the insidious dangers like 'Farm-ville' that lurk within!

In the beginning it seemed like a fairly easy thing to get a handle on.  Make sure all your privacy settings are ramped up to "double-layer tin foil hat", and you're pretty much set.

Problem is, every few months Facebook seems to find a reason to 'revamp' their privacy framework.  The 'proper' way to setup the new configuration has not always been evident.  Even worse, the 'paranoid' settings that you may have configured into the old system, are not always carried over into the new.

Warcraft Auction House To Go - Because I Need My Addiction On The Run!

The introduction of the Warcraft Armory app for the iPhone was pretty cool, checkout my characters gear, see what upgrades I can work towards.  Even test putting together talent builds and checkout the guild in game calendar.  But really, it mostly amounted to a novelty that grew old after awhile.

Flash forward to now, and Blizzard has put the hook in the app.  This past week an update to the WoW Armory App was pushed out to iTunes, and with it came mobile access to all your auction house needs.  It appears that at the moment it's running as a Beta service on most realms.  If you cannot access your realm's auction house, give it a few days, mine appeared after 4 or 5 days.
